How to mute or ignore people and topics

You control what you see here. There are two tools for people, and they do different things.

Mute vs. Ignore

  • Mute stops notifications from that person. You won’t be alerted when they reply to you, mention you, or message you. You will still see their posts.
  • Ignore hides their posts from you. This is the one to use if you don’t want to see someone at all.

How to do it

The easiest way is from the person’s profile:

  1. Select their picture or username, then select their name again to open their full profile.
  2. At the top right of their profile, open the dropdown that says Normal.
  3. Choose Muted or Ignored. For Ignore, pick how long it should last.

You can also manage your full list under Preferences, then Users. When adding someone there, start typing and pick the name from the list that appears.

Ignore becomes available once you’ve spent a little time reading and posting. If you don’t see the option yet, you will soon.

Muting a topic

Open the topic, scroll to the bottom, and change the notification button to Muted. The topic disappears from your lists.

Muting a category

Open the category, select the bell icon at the top right, and choose Muted. Topics from that category won’t appear in your Latest list.

When muting isn’t enough

If someone is breaking the rules, flag the post so a moderator can step in. See our guide on flagging.
